My social responsibility pledge for 2012.

Let me begin with explaining what social responsibility is.

“Corporate Social Responsibility has been defined by Lord Holme and Richard Watts in The World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s publication ‘Making Good Business Sense’ as “…the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as the local community and society at large”.

Well, you might be thinking if why I am applying the term Corporate Social Responsibility to myself. Well, let me explain. I’d always believe that we (humans) are here for a purpose and that purpose is our business here on Earth. So it applies as the same. We, ourselves, should be committed in behaving in accordance to the ethics and to contribute something, at least, to the economic development of our country. Especially that the Philippines is still a developing nation. The question is, until when we will be developing and when we will be fully develop?

Mohandas Ghandi once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Therefore, I conclude that it doesn’t mean that I am currently financially unstable, that I am still dependent to my parents, that I am still jobless (as of the moment) and that I am still a teenager that we don’t have the power to make that change!

My social responsibility commitment for this year until 2013 will be the #1MillionPencilProject.

We (those people who attended the Tumblr Pilipinas V-Day Meetup Year II [See post here, here and here]) has been a part of this movement! 506+ pencils has been collected during this event and this will show that by solidarity, this project will be possible! That is just a test run, but by June 2012, we’ll launch this project to be official. Collected pencils will be given before the school year starts on 2013 to the poorest of the poor communities throughout the archipelago.

We’re so fortunate that we have the tools such as branded pencils/pens, laptops, mobile phones and such in making our lives much easier. But there are kids who doesn’t even have 5 pesos to buy the cheapest pencil around.

Imagine that our future engineers or architects can’t even draw a building because they don’t a pencil. Our future teachers can’t even write A,B,C and D or 1,2,3 and 4 because they don’t have a pencil. Our future writers who will compose the next best song of the generation can’t compose because they don’t even have a pencil. Think of how that simple pencil helped you way back in your childhood in learning a lot things. Then think that all of those things will be deprived to those kids who doesn’t even have a single pencil right now.

This is my pledge. This is my promise. But of course, I can’t do it alone. I need your help. Regardless of who you are, what you are, we have to be united in making this project possible. Like this post or reblog this for me to know that you’re interested. Application forms and vacancies will be soon published in the Tumblr Pilipinas blog so that all of you can choose on which way you can help.

You can volunteer by simply promoting about it, helping us out in our school to school or community to community campaigns, donating pencils and more! Volunteering doesn’t have to be time consuming, every help will be appreciated.

999,494 pencils to go!
